Nederland, Co

We decided to visit the small mountain town of Nederland.  It is a quaint little place, about an hour from Denver.  It is worth the visit!  It has several restaurants and lots of unique shops.  And a carousel!  I LOVE riding those!

Originally it was inhabited by the Ute and Arapahoe tribes.  Fur trappers discoverd the area in the early 1800's and it was incorporated in 1874.  It was a mining town; first silver, then tungsten.  The population "surged" in the 1960's when hippies moved to the area.  The population now is about 1,445.

Evidently, there is a decent bagel shop.

Lunch time!
Sulto's - a coffee shop and restaurant

I ordered something, but it was not made the way I usually get it, so Hannah fixed it for me.

While we were eating, the subject came up about how we used to have land-lines and answering machines.  Hannah remarked that she had studied this in history.  Good grief!!  We aren't that ancient, are we??

This coffee shop orders their coffee beans by the sack load.

A quirky fact that Nederland is known for - a resident of this town made national headlines because he kept a dead body frozen in his backyard!

This resulted in the annual Frozen Dead Guys Festival.

We found a covered bridge and a path to a lake.

We located a music shop that our kids loved!

There was even a dog to pet for Claire.

A nature store/museum

The turtle crawling into the log reminded me of when we took Claire to the aquarium.

We rode a carousel!  It is called the Carousel of Happiness!  I love that!

I felt foolish, but I couldn't get onto my dolphin, so the man had to bring me a step stool!

While we were enjoying our day, Mindy and Jason weren't having such a great day.  They had to take Tenley to the doctor's.  She had a double ear infection, poor dear!  I know they would rather have been with us on this outing than dealing with that.  Tenley could have used the Carousel of Happiness!

Off to the mountains

We had spent the day with Claire and Tenley while Hannah and Sophia went to visit a college.  That evening, we went out to Sam's Diner.

Jason stayed home with Tenley, who wasn't feeling well.

That evening, we made plans on going to the mountains the next day.  There are no mountains like these in our states of Kansas or Wisconsin.  We have hills, so we HAD to head to the beautiful mountains of Colorado!!  It IS commanded in Scripture afterall!  Haggai 1:8 says "Go to the mountain."  (Ok, taken out of context, but still, who can't go!?)

So the next day, we took off.  Mindy's family did not come as Tenley was still sick.  We went in 2 cars as neither one was big enough for all of us.  Hannah was sitting in the front seat of our car, so I gave her charge of the camera.

We had chosen to go to the town of Nederland for the day.  Next post...
