Cairns

The dictionary defines a "cairn" as a heap of stones piled up as a memorial or as a landmark.

My brother has some cool ones at his place!

When we went hiking in Southern Utah, we relied on these so we wouldn't lose our way.

Isaiah 30:21 says Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it."

Daily, we have God to show us the way to go.  We need to follow His Word, His guidance.

Or you will be like some people we saw at the top of the ridge yelling down to us "How do you get there?  We are lost!"  We had to tell them to back up and find a pile of rocks and follow each cairn they would see.

The path He has for us may not be easy, but if we follow Him, it will bring us peace and joy!

We brought back a few of the stones (not off other cairns - we wouldn't want people to get lost!).  We made our own cairns to our front door.

One lady who visited wanted to know what these were about.  She was thinking it was some New Age thing.  And often they are used in that way, but I choose to use them to represent following Christ.

I found this idea on Pinterest and found it humorous.  A little foot.

When you come to our home, we have some cairns to show you the way to our front door.

Sometimes cairns were monuments, like in the Bible where the Israelites put up a monument of stones to commemorate what the Lord had done for them.

Joshua 4:1-7
Now when all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,  “Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe, and command them, saying, ‘Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet are standing firm, and carry them over with you and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge tonight.’” So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe; and Joshua said to them, “Cross again to the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel.

“Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ then you shall say to them, ‘Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.’ So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.”

So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left.  You shall walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.
Deuteronomy 5:32-33
