We had a get-away with the grandkids for a day. We took a little road trip to Salina to the waterpark there. Instead of taking highway all the way, we took the scenic route.
We drove through the little town of Canton. The city has a total area of 0.50 square miles. The Santa Fe Trail was located just southeast of Canton.
The main street has numerous bison statues. Canton is considered the gateway to the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge.
We had recently been there with the cousins. Papa hadn't come with us that particular day and the kids wanted to climb the tower once again.
We could see several bison from the top although in this photo they are just mere dots.
Back onto country roads
Claire thought the cows must have jumped this fence.
"I didn't know cows knew how to jump fences!"
When we got to Salina, we stopped for lunch - Chick Fil A!
The waterpark in Salina is so fun! And very affordable. Senior discounts plus children = a fun afternoon!
Claire didn't want a picture with her sisters and then just seemed a little upset for awhile. This upcoming move has been a little hard on her. She wasn't excited to leave her mommy that day. But after the first slide, she was so happy to have come.
Here is the full mermaid swimsuit picture. So cute!
The mermaid "tail" does come off but she didn't want to take it off.
I didn't get a lot of pictures as we wanted the camera in the locker.
We especially enjoyed the lazy river and the wave pool.
When we left, we took another detour home.
We told the girls we were going to a Kansas castle.
"The name of the Lord is a fortified tower;
the righteous run to it and are safe."
Kansas is not flat
Francisco Vázquez de Coronado y Luján (1510 – 22 September 1554) was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who led a large expedition from Mexico to present-day Kansas through parts of the southwestern United States between 1540 and 1542. It is said he made it as far as this hilltop just north of Lindsborg.
Coronado had hoped to reach the Cities of Cíbola, often referred to now as the mythical Seven Cities of Gold, which is a term not invented until American gold-rush days in the 1800s. His expedition marked the first European sightings of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River, among other landmarks.
The girls decided to do some exploring
They were beginning to make a plot for the next cousin movie.
The girl's parents got more packing done while we were away and the girls had such fun!
