On the road again - Kansas Pueblo Indian ruins

We were off again this weekend - this time to Colorado.  Before leaving, I noticed that way out in western Kansas there were some Pueblo Indian ruins.  That would be interesting!  We turned west at McPherson on 96 toward Scott City.

Along the way, we saw wild turkeys
               and prairie dogs

I love the charm of old court houses.
This one is in Lyons.
Why did our town decide to tear ours down and put up a "modern" kind?  Well, I know the reasoning - being the cost to add air-conditioning etc.  The practical thing, probably.  But I'm sure many cried when they tore down the old Newton court house!  Bravo to those towns who chose to keep the historic buildings up!

There were many farmers working hard this day.

The light poles in Ellinwood are decorated with shocks of Kansas wheat
Al and I went to Ellinwood once.  You can read about it here.

Outhouse/port-a-potty?  Bus shelter?  Not sure.  Patriotic whatever it is.

As we drove along, my ears were popping.  We were steadily gaining altitude the closer to Colorado we got.
We came across a few bikers.  Headed west.  If they would ride their bikes from west to east, at least they'd be going downhill more than biking uphill!

I didn't know about this.....and that is why we stop at historical markers!
We'd get a whiff off and on, notifying us that we were in cattle country.
At Scott City, we turned north on 83.  I knew we were headed to Pueblo ruins, but did not realize there were Mennonites in the area too.  Some Koehns, Dirks and Unruhs.  Perhaps some of our relation.

The ruins are located inside Scott State Park.

We drove around Scott Lake park.

It would be a great place to bring the grandkids to do some hiking and exploring!  Maybe overnight camping.

We had passed this sign on the way to the ruins and we had to check it out.

 There was a memorial here.

If you want to read a more detailed version of the story....  Really is quite interesting.

Back on 83 heading toward I-70.  We could see Monument Rocks in the distance off to the east of the highway.  We had been there before and I blogged about it.   Didn't take the time to stop today.  The sky was so hazy from high winds picking up all the dust.

A stop at Colby.    Interesting driver.

I have no idea about this.
Jesus loves Kansas?
Jesus is the Bread of Life?
I Googled it.  “My idea, people can look at that and they can make up their own mind,” Tuffy Taylor said of the message the billboard sends.

Kansas has many interesting things - including a HUGE Van Gogh painting.  I blogged about that also when we stopped to see it a few years ago.

The name is a portmanteau (blending of words) of Kansas and Colorado.   In the 2010 census, the city population was 153.  The first post office at Kanorado was established in 1889, but the post office was called Lamborn until 1903.

Next stop:  Our daughter in Colorado!
