First I met my friend Jennifer at Norms for coffee and "catch-up."
We talked for 2 1/2 hours!! It had been too long since we'd been together!
When I got home, I had lunch on the deck with my dearest friend, my husband!
Salad, azuki bean rice and fruit. Mmm.
In the afternoon, I met my friend Sarah and we went to the movies! We had heard that Cinderella was a good movie. Our grandkids had gone already...sometimes we go to the movies with them. So we decided we would just go together!
I can't do selfies at all! My arms aren't long enough and my camera phone isn't the best.
Since we went to a matinee, there weren't many people there. In fact, there were only 4 of us in the theatre that afternoon! Us and the parents of our friend Kathy B. What a fun time laughing together with this sweet couple before and after the movie! And I have to say, I LOVED the movie!!
And then, guess what? We ended up back at Norms for the Back Alley pizza! I had never had it before and Sarah told me how good it was. Oh yes! If you are local, you have to try it out!
I didn't intend to have a full friend day but it was so fun! I encourage any reading this to call a friend and do something fun together!
Burns is located about 30 minutes east of Newton on 1st street. It has a population of just over 200.
Wikepedia says that "Burns Union School was the first consolidated grade and high school in Kansas. The school was the first to use a school 'bus' in Kansas, which were special-order wagons in 1904. The building currently houses the Burns Community Museum."
We went with Dave, Marilyn and Elmer, such dear friends!
This is such a great cafe - open only Friday evening and Saturdays.
The restaurant is run by a Holdeman Mennonite couple. Their food is scrumptious! They make dozens of pies and they are gone FAST!! You have to get there early as only the early bird gets the pies!
We were told that they are retiring. After 20 years, they are closing at the end of May. So if you want to try it out, you'll have to hurry!! Be there BEFORE they open at 5 so you don't miss out on the pie!! We got there at 5:30 and we took some of the last of the pies!
As we were leaving the restaurant, we noticed this man across the street at the Sticks and Things shop. He had just purchased this ball of barbed wire. To decorate his yard perhaps?
You have to be careful as you drive in Burns. Pay attention to the speed limit!! The "city" policeman has been known to give out several tickets (including one to my father a few years ago! Maybe he just gave him a warning - but anyway, he was stopped!)
We took a little journey over to the cemetary where Elmer's wife, Tina is buried.
Elmer pastored this church for 12 years
What a beautiful drive in the country. It's so quiet and peaceful on the Kansas prairies!
You could hear the beautiful meadowlarks.
I wished I'd had my zoom lens to capture these "boomer" clouds! Kansas has been having several storms this spring. More predicted this coming week!
Speaking of storms, Dave is doing a sermon series on the book of Job. It has really been meaningful! If you want to listen, click here! God is with us in the storms of our lives! Many people blame God for the awful stuff of life, but really He is not the one to blame. I want to hold His hand IN the storm!
Marilyn took us by the country home where she grew up. She also pointed out the homes of several people we know.
What a lovely evening with a lovely couple and their father!
Each morning we had special breakfasts.
On this morning, Sophia helped with the french toast.
I had to bring my Keurig of course!
Sophia and Hannah begged that we come join them for lunch. So Claire and I walked to the school. Claire began to run and fell down and scraped up her knees. Poor dear.
After lunch, we went to visit the school animals.
This one chicken has some wacky hair!
Claire and I had time to play while the girls were at school. They got these play horses from their great aunt Terry. On two of the days their Gramsie and Great Aunt Terry came to play with the children while I had the day to go back home and catch up on my "to do" list.
She likes to line up her Little People.
Stylin'!
Sophia had ballet one day after school.
Claire and I went to the park close by. Claire had to give the Mennonite immigrant a hug.
Papa came each day after work and stayed to help me put the girls down for bed.
One day we all happened to wear plaid!
Playing outside -
"Look at this dust! It's revolutionary!"
Claire was singing "Jack and Jill went up the hill...."
As Sophia was playing in the bath with Claire, she asked her "Claire, do you like this?"
To which Claire replied "It's heavenly!"
What a wonderful few days parenting once again! "Heavenly!"
